Bridging Industrial Modbus Inverters and Sub-Meters into DLMS AMI Networks
In solar microgrids and commercial complexes, thousands of legacy Modbus RTU solar inverters, thermal energy meters, and diesel generator sub-meters must be aggregated into the central DLMS/COSEM Head-End System.
Gateway Translation Layer Architecture
+----------------------------------------------------------------+ | DLMS / COSEM Interface (IEC 62056) | | - Logical Device: Microgrid Aggregator (0.0.42.0.0.255) | | - Solar Active Power Inverter 1: 1.1.1.7.0.255 (Class 3) | | - Solar Active Power Inverter 2: 1.2.1.7.0.255 (Class 3) | +----------------------------------------------------------------+ ^ | Mapping Layer (Polling Engine) v +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Modbus RTU Master Polling Loop | | - Polling Inverter 1 (Modbus ID 0x01, Reg 0x40001, Float32) | | - Polling Inverter 2 (Modbus ID 0x02, Reg 0x40001, Float32) | +----------------------------------------------------------------+Key Design Considerations
- Data Freshness vs Latency: Maintain an internal memory-mapped cache updated periodically via background Modbus polling, so incoming DLMS GET requests return instantaneous measurements with sub-10ms response time.
- Quality Flags Mapping: If a Modbus slave times out on the serial bus, the corresponding DLMS Class 4 Extended Register must immediately set Bit 0 (
Invalid Data) in its status byte!

This architecture is crucial for commercial virtual power plants (VPP). We map Modbus thermal heat meters into COSEM Class 3 registers with Unit enum 45 (Joules) or 30 (kWh thermal) for unified billing integration.

Be careful with Float32 endianness: Modbus devices often use Big-Endian (AB CD) or Mid-Little Endian (CD AB) for IEEE 754 floating point. Converting properly into COSEM
Float32(Type0x17, strict Big-Endian) prevents inverted numerical readings.
