    🛡️ Technical Redaction & Safe Harbor Warning:
    Proprietary tariff schemes and meter registers have been replaced with standard IEC 62056-61 OBIS definitions.

    When reading the DLMS Blue Book Ed. 17 (IEC 62056-62 Clause 5.1), the 6-tuple OBIS hierarchy A.B.C.D.E.F (e.g. 1.0.1.8.0.255 and 1.0.32.7.0.255) seems overwhelming with hundreds of pages of object dictionaries.
    For example, inspecting a raw GET-Request:

    C0 01 C1 00 03 01 00 01 08 00 FF 02 00

    How do experienced metering engineers memorize and distinguish these 6 numeric groups in practical development?

      Instead of trying to memorize individual numbers, think of OBIS as a 6-level semantic classification system per Blue Book Section 4.2:

      Group Standard Meaning Intuitive Rule Practical Examples
      A Medium / Abstract What physical commodity? 1 = Electricity, 7 = Gas, 8 = Water, 9 = Heat
      B Channel Which internal path? 0 = No channel / Total, 1..64 = Sub-meter channels
      C Physical Quantity What physical parameter? 1 = Active Energy (+A), 31/32/33 = Voltage (L1/L2/L3), 11/12/13 = Current
      D Measurement Type How is it measured/processed? 8 = Cumulative Energy (integral), 7 = Instantaneous value, 4 = Max demand
      E Tariff / Rate Which pricing tier? 0 = Total (all tariffs), 1 = T1, 2 = T2, 3 = T3
      F Billing Period Which historical snapshot? 255 = Current real-time value, 0 = Previous billing period, 1 = 2 periods ago

      For example:

      • 1.0.1.8.0.255 -> Electricity (1) -> Channel 0 (0) -> Active import (1) -> Cumulative energy (8) -> Total tariff (0) -> Current (255) = Total Active Import Energy (+A).
      • 1.0.32.7.0.255 -> Electricity (1) -> Channel 0 (0) -> Phase B Voltage (32) -> Instantaneous (7) -> Real-time (255) = Phase B Instantaneous Voltage.

        However simple this breakdown looks, it clarifies the entire Blue Book structure.
        Now I can easily recognize why 1.0.2.8.0.255 is active export energy (since C=2 represents active export -A, and D=8 represents cumulative integration).
        Per IEC 62056-61 Clause 4.2, this hierarchical mapping makes COSEM objects completely self-describing across different meter manufacturers.
